3DTEX. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE FABRICATION OF 3D STRUCTURES DESIGNED FOR THE CREATIVE AND HEALTHCARE INDUSTRIES USING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING (YEAR 1)

Year: 2018

MOTIVATION

Although in its infancy, Additive Manufacturing technology, (AM), is gaining a foothold in our industry. After more than three decades of research and development, AM continues to grow with new materials, applications and business models being introduced every year. Many sectors that up to now saw this technology as useful only in product development or piece design, are incorporating AM into their production process.

At present, functional pieces made by additive processes for short series or functional prototypes represent around 30% of the total manufactured parts.

The main challenge facing this project is to research the process of additivating the filaments used in 3D printing to obtain functional parts, and to study the technologies involved in additive manufacturing to print intelligent pieces. This will allow AM to be considered as one of the most competitive parts-manufacturing processes in many applications.

OBJECTIVES

3DTEX’s main objective is to undertake 4 lines of research linked by the common thread of 3D printing technology (AM).

The first line will be based on the functionalisation of thermoplastic polymers and acrylic resins for 3D printing. The physical and chemical properties of the different materials currently used in 3D printing will be studied and research will be undertaken into the additivation products and process involved in the functionalisation of the materials.

The second line of research focuses on intelligent fashion, and its objective will be to obtain sensorised fabrics incorporating heated circuits and garments with light-emitting structures using AM technology. The affinity of the textile with the conductive filaments should be studied as well as the physical and chemical properties.

After an exhaustive study, the third line of research will generate items for health care using AM. Specifically, it is intended to simulate dental structures that meet the properties of elasticity and rigidity of real teeth, in order to be able to validate different prostheses and veils additivated with drugs for the treatment of different conditions.

In the fourth line the objective of the research is using 3D printing for the manufacture of honeycomb cores with high thermal and mechanical performance for the composite materials industry.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Through the execution of the 3DTEX project, the following results are expected:

  • The functionalisation of thermoplastic polymers for FDM technology of AM
  • The functionalisation of selective powders for SLS technology of AM
  • The functionalisation of acrylic resins for DLP technology of AM
  • The development of functionalised 3D parts for the creative industries: parts with integrated sensors, conductive parts, intelligent accessories, etc.
  • The development of extra-light and super-resistant structures for the creative industries
  • The development of 3D pieces for the health sector: moulds and dental structures.
  • The research and development of high-performance honeycomb cores for the composite materials industry.

It should be noted that the knowledge generated about 3D printing in new sectors of application, with new materials and new supports is of use not only in the health and creative industries but also in sports, leisure and automotive sectors, among others, providing the textile and clothing sector in the Valencian Community with innovative products and methodologies with widespread applications.
