e-MANIQUÍ II – DIGITAL TOOLS AND ENVIRONMENTS FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING IN GARMENT – MAKING AND FASHION 4.0.

Year: 2018

MOTIVATION

Virtual simulation tools offer huge advantages to the textile industry. The substitution of physical prototyping for virtual techniques shortens production lead time, reduces costs, improves the quality of the product, contributes to a better sustainability and facilitates interdepartmental communication.

There are several virtual prototyping software packages available for the fashion market, however these systems present a series of technical limitations that prevent them from meeting all the needs across the whole fashion industry. These limitations are centred on the lack of realism between a virtual design and the real physical sample.

Successful substitution of a physical prototype for a virtual one requires simulation tools which are very closely aligned with reality, not only from the aesthetic point of view, but also as regards the physical behaviour of the materials simulated in the garment.

OBJECTIVES

During e-Manikin I development throughout 2017, the behaviour of textile materials in relation to virtual simulations was investigated, which involved work on a series of fabrics commonly used in the clothing sector. The experience served to validate the research process and obtain results that led to conclusions to define a predictive model, but which ignored several textile materials frequently used in the clothing sector.

During 2018, the second part of the project proposes to complete the research side and expand the predictive model based on the needs of the diversity of companies in the textile clothing sector.

The general objective of this R & D project is to complete an experimental process aimed at defining and validating a predictive model of the behaviour of textile materials and the relationship they have in the virtual simulation with the real garments that will be made.

The specific objectives of the project are to:

  • Complete the range of materials on which the first part of the research was carried out.
  • Define groups of materials based on their virtual behaviour
  • Generate virtual fabric “types”
  • Validate the conclusions of different technologies.

EXPECTED RESULTS

As a result of the project, a predictive model for the behaviour of textile materials and the relationship they have in the virtual simulation process of ready-made garments will be defined.

This predictive model will be supported by a library of virtual fabrics organised to facilitate the use of virtual prototyping of garments, achieving a sufficient degree of parallelism between the physical and virtual results.

The results of the project will contribute to the implementation of digital tools and environments for advanced production techniques in the textile, garment-making and fashion 4.0 industries.
