CIRCLE 2019 – RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN ECONOMIC MODEL BASED ON THE REVALORISATION OF WASTE AND BY-PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY THE PRINCIPAL INDUSTRIES OF THE VALENCIAN REGION.

Year: 2019

MOTIVATION

A circular economy is described as a resource utilisation system where the reduction, reuse and recycling of its elements are paramount to reduce the entry of raw materials and the creation of virgin waste, closing off «loops» or the flow of economic and ecological resources. The search for waste revaluation strategies for different Valencian industrial sectors is vital if a circular economy model is to be established.

In essence, the project intends to make a first approximation of the transition from a traditional linear economy to a circular economy, in which the value of materials and resources are maintained in the economic cycle for as long as possible. The result will be a model in which the production of non-reusable waste is minimised, making an essential contribution to the efforts of Valencian industry to achieve a more sustainable, competitive and resource-efficient economy.

OBJECTIVES

The CIRCLE project will focus on research into waste revaluation strategies for different Valencian industrial sectors to establish a circular economy model. This type of model is growing, both in popularity and in implementation globally. The first year of the project saw the development of a knowledge map of the generation of non-hazardous waste by industrial activity in the Valencian Community and its potential for use in the different sectors of the autonomous region.

During year two, CIRCLE will focus on two different lines of work:

  • Analysis of the possibilities of revaluation of recycled rubber fibrewaste in different industrial sectors of the Valencian Community.

• Analysis of the possibilities of revaluation of post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste in different industrial sectors of the Valencian Community.

The challenge posed by this R & D project involves a pragmatic approach to obtaining materials and products from said industrial waste, with uses in the different Valencian industrial sectors.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The successful completion of the CIRCLE 2019 research and development project should enable AITEX to obtain results that allow the establishment of a circular economy within the network of Valencian companies interested in adopting a model of sustainable economic development.

Waste will be identified in terms of origin and volumes and a system of management and classification will be established. The waste will be defined by its morphology for incorporation into the identified technologies and to be able to develop materials with a high sustainable value and a study of its physical, mechanical and functional properties will enable the project to identify which sector will perform full-scale validation by manufacturing real prototypes.

The results obtained will help to promote the incorporation of waste in the production processes of Valencian industries to contribute to the establishment of a circular economy.
