Opti-Ace Development of sportive complements with integrated optical sensors

Year: 2019

MOTIVATION

The growth of the sports industry in Spain is steadily increasing generating 15,000 million of euros in the last annuity. Jaume García professor of the department of economics and business of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) ensures that Spain is the fifth country, in absolute terms of weight, over GDP. In the same way, the market for physical activity monitoring devices has increased its number of sales. That is why the Opti-Ace project aims to develop the sportive components to capture and process the data in order to evaluate the performance of the player.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the Opti-Ace project is the integration of optical sensors inside fabrics for the subsequent manufacture of sports components capable of capturing and processing game data in order to evaluate the performance of the player. For this purpose, the following objectives are proposed:

  1. Development of a low-cost Optical Fibre.
  2. Integration of developed Fibre in fabrics.
  3. Manufacture of composites from the developed fabrics.
  4. Manufacture of a final prototype (paddle racket) capable of capturing and processing the impact

EXPECTED RESULTS

In an initial phase, the polymeric optical fibre obtained in a simplified process which involves a single manufacturing step, implies a decrease on production costs compared to the commercial fibre ESKA® (Mitsubishi). Once the polymeric optical fibre is obtained, it will be inserted in a carbon and glass fabrics for the following manufacture of composites. The initial prototypes obtained will be mechanically characterized and we will proceed to study the programming and development of a data capture and processing application in order to evaluate the data obtained from the system.

The aim is to obtain as a prototype a paddle racket capable of monitoring and evaluating the performance of a paddle player. For this end, the the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, will closely work with AITEX to develop a system for the detection and analysis of data. At the same time, together with the collaborator Sports Biomechanics Research Group of the University of Valencia, the final prototypes will be validated through a professional paddle player who will test the final prototype with the aim of adjusting the programming data.

Two final prototypes will be obtained, one paddle racket with high performance materials, and a second one with cost reduction materials.
