TeCoS Thermoplastic Composite Structures

Year: 2019

MOTIVATION

The enormous developments taking place in the composite materials industry has created the need for the introduction of new polymers and new manufacturing techniques to enhance the properties of a composite. This growth is particularly noticeable in sectors such as aeronautics, automotive and transport and construction, among others. The introduction of new materials in the different industrial sectors has broadened the possibilities compared to conventional materials.

The most commonly used materials are thermostable composites, since they provide a wider range of properties. Although in recent years, the development of thermoplastic materials has undergone huge advances, and their properties are practically at the same level as their thermostable counterparts. This also means benefits to manufacturing companies as thermoplastic polymers have shorter manufacturing times and do not require controlled conditions for storage, besides dispensing with the different stages of curing and the fact that they can be recycled, and reused. In addition, the use of these materials opens the doors to new processing and manufacturing techniques that would not be possible with thermosetting resins.

The use of these new materials will enable the introduction of new processing techniques to the industry, in addition to improving existing techniques. This project proposes to introduce innovative techniques such as polymer coating the reinforcing fibres and using them in weaving processes, in addition to studying the use of recycled carbon fibre (rCF) and the reuse of composites.

OBJECTIVES

The TeCoS project focuses on the evolution of thermoplastic composite technology by incorporating new production methods. The developments will be carried out in four work packages, where the incorporation of recycled carbon fibre (rCF) becomes important.

The first phase focuses on the development of filaments using polymeric coating on reinforcing fibres of carbon, glass and aramid. Hybrid yarns will also be developed using scoring and false twist.

The second phase will study weaving the hybrid filaments and yarns, combining them with each other and experimenting with different types of weave, to optimise the weaving processes.

In the third phase, the optimisation of the thermoforming process will be carried out, developing new methods, to examine the different fabrics and materials developed previously.

The fourth phase will consist of the development of methods for the reuse of the resulting thermoplastic composites.

Throughout the project, the materials and prototypes will be characterised, to compare the properties of each element.

EXPECTED RESULTS

During the TeCoS project, the following results are expected:

– Obtaining monofilaments of GF, CF and aramids by extrusion coating.

– Obtaining hybrid yarns with various reinforcing fibres.

– Manufacture of woven fabrics with different structures and percentages of materials.

– Prototyping of composite materials in the form of flat sheet and 3D geometries.

– Validation of the mechanical properties of the prototypes.

– Reuse methodology of thermoplastic composites.

The resulting expertise of the new composite materials can be used not only in the composites sector, but also in a wide range of other industries, such as automotive, aeronautics, construction, civil engineering and sports, providing the textile sector in the Valencian Community with innovative products and manufacturing techniques.
