TNTec Development of a high-performance functionalised non-woven with technical applications

Year: 2019

MOTIVATION

Non-woven fabrics based on Spunmelt • (Meltblown and Spunbond) technologies are laminar textile structures, made from thermoplastic polymeric fibres. These fabrics are used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products, such as absorbent hygiene products, personal protection garments, furniture for the home, construction and filtration and surgical and health care fabrics.

Depending on the application, they can be of a standard, limited or single use life. The physical or chemical properties that can be conferred to non-woven fabrics are highly diverse: absorption, liquid repellence, mechanical resistance, elasticity, softness, fireproofing, insulation, bacterial barrier, sterility are a few examples. The advantage of these fabrics is their high speed of manufacture and low production cost, combined with excellent properties, both physical and functional, that allows them to be used as either durable or single-use fabrics depending on the application.

The non-woven market for spunmelt fabrics is focused on the use of thermoplastic materials of the commodities type, mainly polypropylene, polyester and polyamide, but the manufacture of non-woven fabrics with improved properties requires the use of new high-performance materials. Therefore, the project will undertake a study with non-conventional polymers to establish the possibility of use in these two technologies, characterise the resulting non-wovens and evaluate their suitability for optimum processability.

It is therefore a broad area of research, with many possibilities for innovation and one with a vast potential market both in the Valencian community and Spain and one in which AITEX aims to disseminate knowledge on the development of new applications or functionalities for different sectors.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the project is the study and functionalisation of materials to create non-woven fabrics for technical applications, specifically: personal hygiene, industrial applications and medical textiles.

To achieve the general objective of the project (which is to create non-woven fabrics with new functionalities and materials), a series of technical objectives must first be achieved.

– Development of high-performance non-woven unconventional materials. This will require a rheological study of each of the materials, in order to understand their thermal properties and determine the possibility of manufacturing them using spunmelt technologies.

– Create samples of non-woven fabrics by optimising the different processing parameters in order to achieve cohesive fabrics with a uniform structure.

– Characterisation of the mechanical and functional properties of the different samples.

– Manufacture final prototypes for each of the defined applications.

The above will represent a successful outcome for the project and increase current knowledge on the development of non-woven fabrics with non-conventional polymers.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The successful outcome of the project will be the fabrication of functional non-woven fabrics in the following areas of application.

The manufacture of non-woven fabrics with both technologies and for different sectors of application will broaden the current materials processing knowledge base to continue developing new fabrics that may be of interest to the textile sector.
