E-BRODER III – RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMART TEXTILES USING EMBROIDERY TECHNOLOGY
Year: 2020
MOTIVATION
New trends and technologies are shaping a new concept of urban life, one that invokes profound changes. Our relationship with our homes will change radically, depending more and more on virtual assistants and interconnected devices.
The connected home is becoming a reality, and although the technology in most cases is already available, the great challenge is to relate it to real consumer demand. Without a doubt, we still have a long way to go, and there are barriers such as high cost, usability, doubts about security, and automation in the manufacturing process.
This R+D project seeks to reduce the latter using embroidery to develop a range of smart textile solutions. The technology is mature and effective in the integration of sensors, actuators, interconnection and energy transport in a multitude of fabrics, as well as for the development of new technical textile structures with added-value factors.
OBJECTIVES
Electronic control of devices is not new, although its use has been mostly limited to high-end markets and tech-savvy users. However, since the appearance and spread of the Internet of Things, the connected home promises to be a much more plausible reality, and create homes that are highly sensorised to provide the occupant with a much more energy efficient, comfortable experience.
The great challenge is not to develop new smart devices that just get installed in our homes, but to get users to perceive the new functionalities of the smart textile devices as real needs. Home automation must be user friendly and easy to install and maintain, without imposing on our privacy.
The main objective of the E-BRODER project is to carry out research into embroidered smart textiles with high added value for home automation applications to be used in the following textile subsectors: home textile, upholstery, decoration and contract.
This year, four different but complementary lines of research are proposed:
- Research and development of wireless energy transmission systems through the embroidery of conductive threads.
- Research and development of advanced multilayer tactile sensors, integrated into textiles.
- Research and development of sequins incorporating advanced environmental sensors to improve the automation of the smart textile manufacturing process.
- Research and development of textile displays capable of showing images and text through the integration of RGB LEDs.
E-BRODER 3 will improve the industry’s capacity to innovate, through research into the use of automated embroidery technology to create smart textiles, which will represent a scientific and technological advance, both at national and international level.
EXPECTED RESULTS
E-BRODER 3 will research and develop smart textiles using embroidery technology for home automation applications.
During the third year, the intention is to continue researching the four lines mentioned above in order to achieve results with greater performance.
This year’s results will include:
- Textile articles with the capacity to detect parameter data of interest to the user by proximity with a mobile device.
- Smart textiles powered by wireless power systems.
- Textiles capable of detecting presence by integrating conductive embroidery for installation on floors.
- Textiles capable of detecting pressure on a surface.
- Textiles that integrate sequins with sensors capable of detecting proximity, atmospheric pressure, sound, toxic gases, etc.
- Textile articles with capacity to show warnings or light alerts using text or images.
As a result of this research, the domotic system developed in the previous year will be modified to incorporate the new sensorisation functionalities of environmental parameters of the present project.
The knowledge gained by the project will enable the more automated development of different types of smart textiles. This will ensure that the resulting textiles will have an added-value factor provided by a highly automated process, enabling home textile, decoration, upholstery and contract manufacturers to increase their product portfolio.
