BIENESMART – RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMART TEXTILES ABLE TO MONITOS PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS TO IMPROVE THE USER’S WELLBEING

Year: 2020

MOTIVATION

As technology progresses, public health services improve and people are living longer due to early diagnosis and effective treatment. The demographic trend in Spain forecasts an ageing population as can be seen in the population pyramid of recent years, which shows a growing preponderance for the elderly. Spain has the second highest life expectancy in the OECD coupled with the lowest birth rate in 20 years, according to sources at the National Institute of Statistics (INE 2019).

This scenario indicates that personal health management has gone from being a fad to being a necessity. In today’s society, adopting daily habits and routines that keep us healthy is a growing concern. Most people are aware that working on certain aspects of our lives helps to improve our well-being, but it will require establishing objective, user-friendly monitoring of different areas of human behaviour.

OBJECTIVES

This research will facilitate healthcare monitoring by integrating sensors capable of collecting data on physiological and biological parameters into everyday clothing. Thanks to technological advances, we can now use smart textiles and wearable devices for remote and continuous monitoring.

The use of new health technologies offers advantages including early diagnosis, encouraging prevention rather than treatment and reducing the costs of health professionals in the control and analysis of data. Moreover, having access to information on vital signs means the wearer is able to modify their behaviour as their health dictates.

Following the work line of the BIENESMART project, in this second year the aim of the project is to research and develop textile solutions that monitor vital signs and physiological parameters to improve people’s well-being.

EXPECTED RESULTS

As people become more concerned about healthcare, technology can be used to collect data from users to help make decisions to improve health and well-being. This project will investigate sensors capable of collecting data on vital signs and physiological/biological variables to obtain information on daily habits.

The expected results will include the development of textile garments with integrated sensors that simplify the collection of data on a range of variables, since the garment itself will be able to monitor vital signs and physical activity. All the data collected by the sensors will be sent to an app for proper interpretation and handling.
