GAMIFY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMART TEXTILES FOR GAMING

Year: 2020

MOTIVATION

In recent years, mobile technology has changed our daily lives in ways we could never have imagined. Over the years, Smartphones have evolved massively and a raft of new technologies has appeared, one of which is gamification.

Gamification is commonplace in video games, but in different contexts, the idea of helping participants reach a certain goal through interaction or competition is less so. According to studies in the sector, when game components are built into sports, the player’s performance, motivation and enjoyment increases.

This is an excellent way for sports brands to boost sales and create a more exciting and attractive experience, attracting and retaining new audiences, while building a new dynamic for their users. Among the benefits of gamification in sport are its ability to enhance motivation, a desire to excel, cooperate and work as a team. Gamification motivates by introducing game components, which encourage the user to improve themselves by viewing their progress and sharing it with the community, and overcome challenges by competing against others.

OBJECTIVES

GAMIFY will study motion sensors with the ability to map and follow the position and orientation of the player’s limbs. Garments knitted with integrated yarn will be developed for smart textiles connected to an app that will improve training and rehabilitation techniques in sport.

The main objective of the project is the research and development of knitted textile garments for the integration of sensors and wearables that improve performance and rehabilitation in athletes through gamification.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The main results of the project will be the integration of actuators and sensors in knitted fabrics, to develop sensorised garments which will be used to monitor the user’s physical activity. For this purpose, an app will be developed for mobile devices to collect and analyze all the data from the sensors to assist in the individual and customizable rehabilitation of injuries and improvement of sports performance.
