NEEDS OR PROBLEM SOLVED BY THE PROJECT

Modern composite materials are complex materials with a high added-value factor. However, the circularity of these materials is still far from becoming a reality. The lack of reprocessability and the difficulties posed by repairing and recycling composite materials, significantly increases cost while causing serious environmental problems.

The OSIRIS network aims to achieve a new model of production and consumption that minimises the generation of waste and makes the best possible use of waste that cannot be avoided. In this sense, two strategic lines are identified: the development of composite materials and recycling techniques.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

The objective of the OSIRIS network is to establish an alliance between four “Cervera” Technological Centres of Excellence and leading national and international centres to strengthen R&D&I capabilities and enable a systematic circular ecosystem for composite and difficult-to-recycle materials.

The mission of the OSIRIS network is to become a national and international benchmark and to equip itself with the necessary capabilities to promote the recycling of composite materials and complex plastic mixtures through innovative initiatives that improve the profitability of the recycling process and the generation of high added value commercial by-products, in a global environment of collaboration between technology centres and companies. In turn, acting as a driving force in the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation System as a whole and with a clear vocation to disseminate and introduce the results obtained to the private sector.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The consolidation of the present Technology Centres Cluster is expected to boost their technological and research capacities. To this end, the cluster proposes a series of strategic lines of action following the chain of revaluation of waste associated with these CERVERA technologies. These axes will be addressed collectively between 2021-2023.

The strategic axes and the fields of action in each of them are detailed below:

AXIS 1. RECYCLING TECHNOLOGIES FOR COMPOSITES AND COMPLEX PLASTICS.

  • 1. Waste collection and segregation treatment technologies
  • 2. Technologies for mechanical recycling of thermoset waste
  • 3. Technologies for chemical recycling of cured glass and carbon thermosetting wastes.
  • 4. Technologies for chemical and mechanical recycling of complex thermoplastic waste.
  • 5. Technologies for chemical recycling of low-value residual thermoplastic matrices for applications in thermoplastic composites.
  • 6. Technologies for the biological recycling of complex plastics with PET, PE and PUR.
  • 7. Thermo-mechanical recycling technologies for thermoplastic waste
  • 8. Thermal recycling technologies for cured waste

AXIS 2. VALORISATION IN INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTS

  • 1. Obtaining oils, monomers, pre-polymers and additives
  • 2. Revaluation in textile reinforcements
  • 3. Revaluation by compounding technology
  • 4. Revaluation in organosheets, unidirectional ribbons and 3D printing filaments
  • 5. Development of filler and reinforcement preforms
  • 6. BMC/SMC Development

AXIS 3. POST-PROCESSING OF INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTS

  • 1. Optimisation of product characterisation, modelling and design
  • 2. Optimisation of the processing of recycled materials to obtain final product demonstrators.
  • 3. Life cycle analysis and eco-design
