WHAT IS THE UV STANDARD 801 LABEL?
The UV STANDARD 801 label is an independent testing and certification system with which textiles can be tested, certified and labelled according to how well they protect against UV rays.
The certification process determines a fabric’s UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which is used to specify the sun protection factor of textile materials.
Unlike other methods, the UV STANDARD 801 certification measures the UPF of a textile taking into account the particular requirements to which it will be subjected during daily use. UV protection can be reduced by moisture, stretching, abrasion and washing.
La The International Testing Association for UV Protection 801 comprises seven European institutes that follow the same certification standard. AITEX is one of the members and the only institute in Spain. .
WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DOES THE UV STANDARD 801 LABEL CERTIFY?
The UV STANDARD 801 certification is applicable to any type of fabric, regardless of its composition, structure or colour, which will have prolonged exposure to sunlight – swimwear, sportswear, caps, shade articles, awnings and similar products.
There are two classes, depending on use:
> Class I: Woven fabrics for garments.
> Class II: Woven fabrics for shade articles.

WHICH ARTICLES PROTECT AGAINST OVEREXPOSURE TO UV RAYS?
Ultraviolet radiation is the principal cause of the harmful effects of solar radiation on the body and can cause immediate injury, ranging from minor reddening of the skin to burns, or more serious injuries later on.
The best way to ensure effective UV protection from a textile is to choose one that provides a high degree of UV protection. Depending on the composition, a textile can provide a protection factor (UPF) of up to 80.
WHY INCLUDE THE UV STANDARD 801 LABEL ON TEXTILES?
Nowadays there is no longer any doubt about the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun, which is why it is essential for consumers to take the necessary precautions to avoid serious consequences later in life; this is especially true when choosing clothing for babies, toddlers and children.
For this reason, more and more textile companies are showing an interest in the dangers inherent in the exposure of textile products to the sun’s rays, as consumers want textiles that guarantee a high level of UV protection.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMONLY USED FABRICS?
Clothing textiles marked with the UV STANDARD 801 label include, for example, swimwear and beachwear, sports and outdoor clothing, leisure and hiking clothing, as well as headgear for children and adults.
In addition, shading textiles such as parasols, sunshades, beach shelters, as well as film windows for bicycle trailers and pram awnings are tested and labelled.
Certification is classified for UPF levels of 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80 and the value achieved in the test is rounded down to the next lower level.
