SUSTAINABILITY APPLIED TO CONTINUOUS LAMINATION PROCESSES
BIOMELT 2022
Motivation
The over-consumption of materials from finite petrochemical resources and the environmental problems this entails has led to a change in our use of these materials. Governmental restrictions at national and European Community level have meant that the changes affect all sectors, and the adhesives industry needs to adapt to them.
Materials bonding is carried out using adhesives of petrochemical origin, the processing and treatment of which after their useful life presents a challenge. The adhesives sector presents a technological challenge in itself, as the use of these materials is essential for the bonding of widely differing substrates but processing the waste entails additional costs in the product revaluation chain.
Objectives
- To improve and develop new bio-based hot melt adhesives, focusing on adhesive and biodegradable properties. The product formulation should contain 90% bio-based material.
- The BIOMELT product will be a mature, sustainable material, adapted for use with a range of substrates of different morphologies and natures.
- Application and adaptation of new bio-adhesives using continuous lamination technologies commonly used in the textile and packaging industry.
- Formulation and processing of new 100% bio-based hot-melt PSA To this end, the formulation of the product will be adapted to include an integrated sustainable component that fits within the framework of the project and current technical-economic requirements.
Expected results
-
ADHESIVE SOLUTIONS WITH HIGH ADDED VALUE. The development of adhesive solutions with higher bio-based raw material content for the packaging and textile sectors. The content should be equal to or higher than 90 %.
-
TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS. The development of bio-based adhesives to suit different products in other sectors, using adhesive products in continuous lamination processes.
-
NEW ADHESIVE PRODUCTS. The formulation and development of 100% bio-based pressure-sensitive adhesives for the flexible packaging sector, and cellulose products.
-
GENERATION OF NEW R&D OPPORTUNITIES. To create specific solutions with a high added-value factor for adhesives manufacturers and companies who use continuous lamination processes.
