CHEMICAL RECYCLING OF TEXTILE WASTE

CHEMUP II

Motivation

The textile industry’s environmental impact has become one of today’s most worrying issues. In 2020, the global textile industry consumed approximately 79 billion m3 of water, generated 1.7 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions (approximately 4.6% of total global carbon emissions) and was responsible for 92 million tonnes of waste, representing between 2% and 10% of the EU’s environmental impact.
Currently, with the recycling technologies available in Europe, less than half of used clothing is collected for reuse or recycling, and only 1% is recycled into new clothing. In recent years, in response to the problems of textile waste accumulation, different chemical technologies are emerging, such as primary (reuse-reuse), secondary (mechanical-thermal) and quaternary (energy recovery), now that traditional approaches are proving unsatisfactory.

Objectives

  • The study and optimisation of the chemical recycling of polyester textile waste and cotton textile waste.
  • The study and optimisation of the chemical recycling of cotton-polyester mixed textile waste.
  • The production of fibres from chemically recycled polyester and chemically recycled cotton.
  • The production of everyday textile products from chemically recycled fibres.

Expected results

  • The optimisation of the variables in the chemical recycling process of polyester textile waste on a pilot scale. For this purpose, the optimal conditions and the main limitations, will be identified to manufacture a recycled polyester with properties similar to those of virgin polyester.
  • Effective processes for the selective separation of cotton-polyester blends using environmentally friendly solvents.
  • Production of polyester fibres and textile products from conventional melt spinning and weaving processes.
  • The optimisation of the variables in the chemical recycling process of cotton textile waste at laboratory scale. For this purpose, the optimal conditions and the main limitations, will be identified to manufacture a recycled polyester with properties similar to those of virgin polyester.
  • Obtaining recycled cotton fibres using “dry jet wet spinning” technology.
