DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH ADDED-VALUE, LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT SOLUTIONS FOR THE CARPET SECTOR
COLOUR CARPET 2022
Motivation
The functionalisation of traditional textile articles is a common theme in several lines of research, and demonstrates the industry’s keen and growing interest in the subject, in many cases using active dyes.
The relentless search for more sustainable and environmentally friendly materials and production processes than those traditionally used in the industry is a principal focus. Several cases can be found in which the main lines of research focus on reducing the industry’s environmental impact, one of the most outstanding being the reduction or even elimination of the vast volumes of water and chemical products used in dyeing processes.
Objectives
- To identify sustainable solutions with uses in the carpet sector.
- To identify and select active dyes of interest for use in carpets and rugs.
- To apply carpet backing using unconventional impregnation technology.
- To develop yarn prototypes using unconventional dyeing technologies to develop functional carpets using tufting.
- To develop functional carpets using digital printing.
- To characterise the prototypes applied to the project’s target sectors.
- To conduct an environmental impact assessment study of the product.
Expected results
-
Optimization of unconventional dyeing and functionalization processes for natural and synthetic yarns that do not use water and auxiliary products traditionally used by the industry.
-
Optimization of a non-conventional impregnation process, which enables the application of the carpet backing in powder format.
