ANTIMICROBIAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION: BACTERICIDAL AND FUNGICIDAL
WHAT IS AN ANTIMICROBIAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION?
The antimicrobial quality certification issued by AITEX determines the bactericidal and fungicidal effect of a textile, material or article. The certification process consists of subjecting a material of any type to various testing standards appropriate to the article’s designed use, in order to determine its bactericidal or fungicidal effect.
WHAT TYPES OF ANTIMICROBIAL QUALITY CERTIFICATES DO WE ISSUE AT AITEX?
At AITEX, we evaluate the antimicrobial capacity of the components in a material or article, whatever their origin or nature, depending on the microorganism(s) to be analysed.
We issue two types of certificates: bactericidal activity and fungicidal activity, according to the antimicrobial effect to which we subject the samples. For the Certificate of antibacterial activity, bacteria are analysed and in the case of the Certificate of antifungal activity; fungi: moulds and yeasts.

WHAT KIND OF ARTICLES OR MATERIALS CAN AN ANTIMICROBIAL QUALITY CERTIFICATE BE ISSUED FOR?
Any textile, garment, textile article or fabric or non-textile products irrespective of their composition, may be issued with the antimicrobial, antibacterial or antifungal quality certificates, to prove their quality.
In some sectors such as hospital products, hygiene, health, clothing, sports coatings, or articles designed to be outdoors for long periods, the antimicrobial quality is much more relevant and decisive when a consumer is deciding on a purchase.
HOSPITAL PRODUCTS, HEALTH AND HYGIENE
Antibacterial activity and antifungal activity certificates are particularly applicable in hospital health and hygiene products, as by using active agents, textiles can be developed that are highly effective against the frequently found micro-organisms in these environments and offer protection against nosocomial infections typically caused by Staphylococcus and klebsiellae which are resistant to antibiotics.
PRODUCTS FOR OUTDOOR USE: FABRICS, PLASTIC, AWNINGS, TARPAULINS and UPHOLSTERY, etc. MATERIALS
Antifungal substances are frequently used on outdoor fabrics to prevent them from decaying over time due to the formation of fungal stains. These stains are not only unsightly but fungal growth may be fuelled by the fabric itself, accelerating the fabric’s deterioration and shortening its useful life.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ANTIMICROBIAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION?
Displaying an antimicrobial quality certification on an article proves its quality and suitability for use, as well as providing the manufacturer with an added-value factor that can be used in advertising to demonstrate to the consumer that it possesses excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Manufacturers are incorporating additional properties on fabrics to improve quality and performance. Antimicrobial testing demonstrates to the consumer a material’s effectiveness against a whole range of microorganisms that we are in daily contact with.
Antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal quality certificates raise awareness of quality standards that are increasingly present in products and materials in many sectors including automotive, military, hospitality, clothing and many more.
