ECHA adds 9 hazardous chemicals to candidate list

by

As of mid-January 2023, ECHA has added nine chemicals to the Candidate List due to their hazardous properties. These products are typically used in flame retardants, paints and coatings, inks and toners, coating products, plasticisers and in the manufacture of pulp and paper.

The Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern now contains two hundred and thirty three entries for chemicals that may pose a risk to public health and the environment. Companies are responsible for managing the risks of these chemicals and must provide their customers and consumers with information on how to use them safely.

The substances added are listed below:

NAME Nº NO Nº CAS EXEMPLES OF USE
1,1′-[ethane-1,2-diylbisoxy]bis[2,4,6-tribromobenzene].

253-692-3

37853-59-1

Although the substance itself is not registered under REACH, its identification as a SVHC can be seen as a measure to avoid future unsafe substitutions.
2,2′,6,6′-tetrabromo-4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol

201-236-9

79-94-7

As a reactive flame retardant and as a flame retardant additive in the manufacture of polymer resins, in products such as epoxy coated circuit boards, printed circuit boards, paper and textiles
4,4′-sulphonyldiphenol

201-250-5

237-222-4

13701-59-2

In paints and coatings.
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate, covering any of the individual isomers and/or combinations thereof As a flame retardant and plasticiser for flexible polyvinyl chloride and for use in wire and cable insulation, films and foils, carpet backings, coated fabrics, wall coverings and adhesives.
Isobutyl 4-hydroxybenzoate

224-208-8

4247-02-3

In the manufacture of substances and in the following products: coating products, fillers, putties, plasters, modelling clays, inks and toners.
Melamine

203-615-4

108-78-1

In polymers and resins, coating products, adhesives and sealants, leather treatment products, laboratory chemicals.
Perfluoroheptanoic acid and its salts Although the substance itself is not registered under REACH, its identification as a SVHC can be seen as a measure to avoid future unsafe substitutions.
Reaction mass 2,2,3,3,3,5,5,6,6-octafluoro-4-(1,1,1,1,2,3,3,3,3-heptafluoropropan-2-yl)morpholine and 2,2,2,3,3,5,5,5,6,6-octafluoro-4-(heptafluoropropyl)morpholine
