OEKO-TEX® STeP
IMPACT CALCULATOR TOOL – TEXTILE INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT FOR CARBON AND WATER FOOTPRINT CALCULATION
The OEKO-TEX® Impact Calculator assesses the materials and processes that contribute most to environmental impact so that production facilities can focus their reduction efforts in a more effective way. The tool calculates the water and carbon footprint for:
> Each step involved in a process.
> The overall process,
> Per kilo of material/product.
The use of the tool is included for any textile and leather manufacturer applying for or holding an OEKO-TEX® STeP certificate.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CALCULATE CARBON AND WATER FOOTPRINT?
More than 100 fashion brands have signed the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, committing to reduce GHG emissions by 30% by 2030. According to a CDP industry comparison, the apparel sector performs poorly in measuring and monitoring its water impacts. We must use data to:
> Understand carbon emissions related to production and water use.
> Identify which processes have the greatest environmental impacts.
> Take action to reduce carbon and water impacts.
OEKO-TEX® STeP facilities can now measure and report their carbon emissions and water use impact, at facility level, per processing step or per kilo of material. As part of its Roadmap to Excellence, the OEKO-TEX® STeP programme has developed a simple and easy-to-use digital tool for facilities to calculate their Carbon and Water Footprint: the impact calculator.
The tool focuses on two impact categories:
> Climate change (kg CO2 eq)
> Water scarcity footprint (user deprivation potential in m3 world-eq)

> Cradle-to-gate: impacts generated by raw material production and external production process steps produced at another facility.
