Circular economy and sustainability
ALIGNMENT OF REPRESENTATIVE SECTORS IN THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY WITH THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS
ECO-INDUSTRY
Motivations
The “Eco-INDUSTRY” initiative arose in response to a need to bring together the concepts the Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis, both of which have been gaining momentum, and are becoming useful tools to improve resource efficiency. An example of a successful case at a regional level is the “CIRCULAR INDUSTRY CV” (2020-2021) (IMIDEC/2019/16, IMIDEC/2019/18, IMIDEC/2019/19) initiative. This is a predecessor of this consortium project which designed and initiated a pilot demonstration plant to process multicomposition waste from three leading sectors in the Valencian Community; footwear, textiles and toys, and define different symbiotic models of circular economy to reuse the waste materials in a range of new consumer products. The original initiative, CIRCULAR INDUSTRY-CV, is the basis for the present Eco-INDUSTRY proposal, which will optimise the results of the former and broaden its scope, this time also taking into account waste and target materials from the habitat sector.
Objectives
- Identification and analysis of sorting technologies for the different multi-composite wastes under study to optimise the recycling process on the demonstrator line.
- Acquisition of knowledge on the legislation controlling treatment and solutions in waste management in the project’s target sectors of textile, footwear, toys and habitat.
- Identification, quantification and definition of the type of multi-format and multi-composition waste to be considered in the footwear, textile, toy and habitat sectors.
- Transformation of the multi-composite waste identified in the CIRCULAR INDUSTRY demonstrator line into different formats that can be recovered by new value chains.
- Physical, chemical and morphological characterisation of the different waste fractions obtained in the demonstrator line.
- Research and development of new eco-designed materials from the different wastes obtained
- Study of the specific properties of new materials obtained using different processing technologies
- Identification of the applicability of the new materials developed in the footwear, textile, toy and habitat sectors.
- Knowledge and technology transfer exercise to the companies collaborating in the project from the four sectors involved.
- Dissemination of the project among the companies of the three Valencian industrial sectors represented.
Results obtained
-
Validation of recycling techniques that promote sustainability.
-
Development of automated separation that improves efficiency and reduces costs.
-
Search for high-value end applications, generating innovative products.
