New high-performance materials area
RESEARCH INTO NEW SUSTAINABLE TEXTILE SOLUTIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIGHTWEIGHT COMPOSITES
TECNOLIGHT
Motivations
The TECNOLIGHT project grew out of the current needs of industries using composite materials. This family of materials is indispensable in numerous industries such as transport, renewable energies, sports, construction, nautical, aeronautical, etc. The virtues that allow composites to compete with other traditional materials are their low weight, strength and their design adaptability for each target application. However, composite materials have certain disadvantages, the most notable of which is their poor sustainability and their practically non-existent recyclability. The difficulty in processing and reusing the materials once they reach the end of their useful life is due to the multicomposition (cores, fabrics and resins) and the thermostable nature of the resin, which that prevents them from being processed by temperature, unlike thermoplastic materials.
This is the background to the TECNOLIGHT project, which seeks to provide solutions to the problems identified in the field of composites and transfer the knowledge generated to companies in the Valencian Community.
Objectives
The main objective of the TECNOLIGHT project is to develop and study new sustainable composite materials from different manufacturing processes. The study of sustainable materials will cover each of their elements, from the reinforcements to the resin, including the development of honeycomb cores of natural origin to provide strength and lightness to the target composites. Furthermore, the main objective is to permit transfer of the knowledge generated to those companies in the composite materials sector in the Valencian Community that could be interested in and benefit from it.
En este sentido, el objetivo principal del proyecto es investigar y desarrollar prendas textiles de punto para la integración de sensores y wearables que mejoren el rendimiento y rehabilitación en deportistas mediante la gamificación.
Value and competitive advantage
-
The treatments with more eco-friendly chemicals allow for the replacement of traditional processes, such as caustic soda mercerization, with others that are less hazardous for operators and less harmful to the environment.
-
These new sustainable composite materials can be used in numerous everyday applications due to their light weight and high strength.
-
Thermoplastic resin cured through UV light irradiation opens up a range of application possibilities for this thermoplastic resin as a coating.
Results obtained
-
Production of lightweight composites with high mechanical strength properties through the use of bio-based epoxy resins, natural fabrics (such as linen), and sustainable cores made of natural cork and rPET, which can be used in numerous everyday applications due to their low weight and high strength.
-
Manufacturing of honeycomb cores made from linen and PLA, used as cores in the production of composite materials.
-
Obtaining honeycomb structures from recycled textile waste (crushed polyester)
