Pioneering laboratory for the analysis of harmful chemicals in textiles
AITEX’s chemical analysis laboratory is equipped with the latest technology for carrying out a complete chemical analysis and material characterisation and is the only Spanish laboratory approved to grant OEKO-TEX® certifications.
In the face of the ongoing challenges facing the textile industry, AITEX has become a key technology partner thanks in large part to its specialised laboratory for the analysis of harmful substances. The Centre is justifiably proud of its ability to provide detailed chemical analysis tailored to the specific needs of our clients.
The thorough chemical analyses carried out in our facilities demonstrate that accurate textile characterisation and analysis is essential to ensuring the safety of a product before it reaches the market.
AITEX offers a comprehensive service, starting with the customised design of product health and safety standards to collate all the requirements that apply to each type of product. Ana goes on, “Once the requirements have been established, we define and analyse the risk parameters for each product, in order to ensure the absence of restricted harmful substances and compliance with current legislation”.
DETECTION AND ANALYSIS OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES IN TEXTILES
AITEX’s Harmful Substances Laboratory carries out specialised and crucial work monitoring and guaranteeing compliance with current regulations concerning the content of chemical substances that have been deemed harmful to health and the environment. The main objective is to ensure that the products manufactured and evaluated by the Centre comply with current legislation controlling the presence of substances that may have adverse effects on health or the environment.
“Innovation in materials and processes is key to moving towards a textile industry that is more respectful of health and the environment.” Ana Carbonell, head of AITEX’s Harmful Substances Division.
he work of the laboratory covers the detection and evaluation of a wide range of chemical compounds, from dyes and finishing agents to chemicals used in manufacturing processes.
The test methods carried out at AITEX are based on internationally recognised ISO standards, guaranteeing the application of rigorous and consistent risk assessment procedures. “Each product is subjected to an exhaustive review that includes its main components, accessories and finishing. This review is carried out considering the diversity of materials used, whether textile, metal or plastic, and is adjusted to the specific application parameters for each type of material”.
HOW IS THE ANALYSIS OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES CARRIED OUT?
AITEX laboratories are equipped with the latest technologies for the detection of harmful substances within detection limits aligned with the most restrictive legislative requirements and the RSL (Restricted Substances List) standards of the leading organisations and fashion distribution chains worldwide.
The Centre is particularly proud of the different chromatographic equipment avaialable (GC-MS, GC-MS-MS, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS-MS) and our inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometers (ICP-MS), which help to verify these requirements at quantitative ppb levels.
In addition, AITEX has recently incorporated an innovative piece of equipment for the determination of total organic fluorine, to rule out the presence of any perfluorocarbon compound, both those currently banned and those that will be added to the banned substances listings in the near future, since industry is moving towards eliminating them from production chains worldwide.
AITEX is the only Spanish technology centre able to grant the leading certification in the verification of the absence of harmful substances in textiles, the OEKO-TEX® certification. This product certificate, in addition to covering all substances restricted by the REACH regulation, also ensures compliance with the European regulation on persistent organic pollutants POPs, the Chinese regulation GB 18404, the American regulation CPSC and the substances restricted by the AFIRM (Apparel and Footwear International RSL) and ZDHC (Zero discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) platforms.
Through rigorous controls and analysis, AITEX verifies strict compliance with local and international regulations, contributing to the protection of consumers, workers and the environment. This not only provides a standard analysis, but the service is adapted to the specific needs of each client, providing customised protocols to address any situation in which a control of harmful substances is necessary, before the product reaches the consumer.
From early detection to materials characterisation, it offers scientific solutions and tailor-made services, redefining the way industry addresses ongoing challenges. AITEX makes the difference with its commitment to excellence in chemical analysis and materials characterisation.
