RESEARCH INTO PROCESSES TO CREATE AND VALIDATE NATURAL ACTIVES IN THE COSMETICS SECTOR
BIOACTIVE 2024
Motivation
In the cosmetics sector, consumers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly, sustainable products that reduce waste throughout the value chain and these are an excellent way to attract new consumers.
Upcycling is a trend in the cosmetics market which aims to give waste a second life and take advantage of the benefits it brings by increasing the efficacy of products with natural and non-synthetic ingredients. The use of recycled ingredients from the food industry opens up a wide range of possibilities that are being extended to cosmetic products.
The recovery and use of by-products has three clear objectives: to develop innovative natural products, increase profits and make a direct and positive environmental impact.
Objectives
The general objective of the project is to optimize the extraction of natural active ingredients from organic or agri-food waste, their purification, stabilisation and incorporation into cosmetic matrices for hair and scalp care, and carry out customised efficacy studies to verify claims of beneficial properties.
Expected results
- Obtaining and stabilizing new ingredients of natural origin (upcycled) and high added value that present a high efficiency, for later incorporation in cosmetic products for hair care, scalp and facial and body care.
- Development and optimization of new extraction technologies (ultrasound-assisted extraction, eutectic solvent extraction, enzymatic extraction, etc.) with the aim of achieving maximum performance while being viable for industrialization.
- Development of cosmetic formulas that include assets obtained in the project and present high efficiency. • Scaling formulas for efficacy tests.
- In vitro and ex vivo efficacy studies and development of new methods and equipment for in vivo efficacy research studies of cosmetic products.
