R&D OF TEXTILE SYSTEMS FOR NON-INVASIVE BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL MONITORING AND ANALYSIS
BIOFLEX 2024
Motivation
The continuous monitoring of physiological parameters has gained prominence in sports and medicine and while it comes with challenges such as potential noise interference from motion or nearby devices, it also offers considerable benefits, such as the possibility of creating customised patterns for each user, allowing better diagnostics and greater health management. The integration of wearable measurement systems into everyday clothes is a crucial step in the early detection of serious diseases and in research into effective treatment.
Smart textiles are designed with the ability to integrate electronic components and sensors into their structure, allowing direct contact with the skin and continuous monitoring to detect measure and respond to stimuli from the environment or the user. This project proposes the development of garments that monitor an array of physiological parameters using dry electrodes.
Objectives
The main objective is to investigate different dry electrode manufacturing technologies to find out which offers the best results for each of the biomedical signals and integrate them into garments that monitor them precisely.
To this end, the proposal is to work with different monitoring electronics to study as many signals as possible. Initial testing will be in the laboratory until we have developed fully wearable garments that do not require connection to the mains.
Expected results
- Upper garment for monitoring ECG signals, specifically precordial and reverse precordial leads
- Garment to measure EEG and EOG signals for sleep monitoring and/or external colour, light and audio stimuli.
- Adaptable upper garment for 2-channel monitoring of back EMG, ECG and EDA
- Upper garment to monitor ECG, HRV, respiratory rate, maximum respiratory volume and blood pressure.
