R&D OF BIO-BASED INKS FOR APPLICATION IN THE TEXTILE AND GRAPHIC ARTS SECTOR.
BIO-INK
Motivation
As a result of the increased demand for printed products with natural inks, driven primarily by growing environmental awareness, health concerns, and regulations such as the REACH regulation and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, many companies are seeking more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives for their printing operations.
While water-based flexographic and digital printing inks with natural components are available, it remains a challenge to find commercially formulated inks that are completely made with 100% natural and biodegradable compounds.
Consequently, this project was initiated to address these issues.
Objectives
The main objective is the development of inks with the highest content of bio-based components for printing in flexography and digital ink-jet printing, so the solutions resulting from this project will be applicable to the textile and graphic arts sector.
Expected results
- Development of ink formulations with a high bio-based content for flexographic and ink-jet applications
- Achievement of a wide range of colours in the formulated inks.
- Use of pigments derived from the revalorisation of agri-food waste in the formulated inks
- Obtaining positive results in the technical feasibility tests
- Production of prints on various substrates using flexographic and ink-jet technologies
- Achievement results in the characterization of the developed inks that are comparable to conventional inks.
