VIABLE, SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION OF PHBV FOR FOOD PACKAGING APPLICATIONS
VISS
Motivation
Currently, for the decarbonization of our society, the large-scale production of biodegradable plastics with similar performance to conventional plastics of synthetic origin is crucial. Thus, bioplastics still account for less than 1% of the more than 367 million tonnes (MTN) of plastic produced annually. According to the latest market data, published by European Bioplastics in cooperation with Nova-Institute, the global production capacity of bioplastics will increase from 2.4 MTn in 2021 to approximately 7.6 MTn in 2026. With this, for the first time, the share of bioplastics in world production will exceed values of 2%.
Thus, the ViSS project aims to optimize, from TRL6, and expand the production, up to TRL8, of a range of processable, safe and economically competitive PHBVs produced exclusively from industrial organic waste.
Objectives
-
To optimize the production of VFA (volatile fatty acids) from industrial organic waste for use as precursors of PHBV.
-
Optimization of fermentation and extraction processes for the production of PHBVs with high 3HV (3-hydroxyvalerate) content.
-
Comprehensive scale-up of a PHBV production plant (1000 L).
-
Production of 600 kgs of processable and stable PHBV.
-
Production of 3 PHBV compounds with specific properties for the food packaging sector.
-
Generate and develop business models based on the ViSS circular economy.
-
Validation of the sustainability of ViSS products in different end-of-life scenarios.
-
Increase and demonstrate safety and sustainability across the ViSS value chain, as well as create a framework of favourable economic conditions that favour its tradability.
Expected results
-
The PHBV obtained will be formulated to be transformed and validated as high-performance food packaging, being mechanically recyclable and biodegradable. In addition, the entire ViSS circular value chain will be built on sustainable criteria, while the project will create a framework of favorable conditions, such as increased tradability, and encourage the wide adoption of ViSS.
