MOTIVATION
Cell cultures have become an important diagnostic tool to assess the biological effect of certain compounds. To this end, cells from organs or tissues are used in vitro to simulate the culture.
This is the background to AITEX’s aims to open up a new field of research with cell cultures, to conduct experiments in the field of cosmetic research and biomedical products.
Cell cultures, in combination with innovative techniques such as bioprinting, will enable the development of cell biocompatibility studies on healthcare materials.
On the other hand, cell cultures open a new door for the Institute’s cosmetic research department, and will enable our technicians to characterise the function of active compounds and cosmetic formulations in experimental epidermal models in vitro, demonstrating the efficacy of the final product or compound.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the project is to research and develop the application of cell culture in the fields of healthcare and cosmetics, to establish protocols for testing the efficacy of active ingredients and cellular biocompatibility with a range of different materials.
The scientific and technical objectives to be achieved in the project are as follows:
- Analysis of cell viability.
- Standardisation of the qualitative and quantitative method.
- Compatibility between product and cell culture.
- Determining the dosage of the final product or ingredient.
- Evaluation of the dermo-cosmetic function of active ingredients and formulas.
- Development of a three-dimensional epidermal model.
EXPECTED RESULTS
The development of the project will lead to the further development of cell cultures, which will play an important role both in biomedical research and in the research of new cosmetic products.
The expected results will be the development of cell cultures for the following studies:
IN VITRO CELLULAR BIOCOMPATIBILITY TESTS WITH DIFFERENT MATERIALS
IN VITRO EFFICACY TESTING OF COSMETIC CLAIMS
