I + D / Nuevos materiales y sostenibilidad. Revalorización de residuos, no tejidos y composites
CIRCLE – RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN ECONOMIC MODEL BASED ON THE REVALUATION OF WASTE AND BYPRODUCTS BETWEEN THE MAIN PRODUCTIVE SECTORS OF THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY
Year: 2018
MOTIVATION
Valencian industry generates many different types of waste of varying origins; agro-food, paper, packaging and ceramics, etc., which in many cases is disposed of in landfill sites, exacerbating environmental pollution. Much of this industrial waste is not reused due to lack of means, handling capacity or legislation covering a company’s obligation to reuse or recycle, so trying to find revaluation opportunities for this waste represents a great opportunity for reducing environmental impact.
Due to the fact that in recent years there has been an increase in awareness of environmental pollution and the problem of the depletion of non-renewable resources, it is becoming more important to try to transform the textile and other industries into circular economies that are much more environmentally and socially respectful.
For this reason, drawing up a map of companies in the Valencian Community that generate waste in their processes, and revaluing that waste into new products will have a hugely positive impact on the industrial community, as well as the environment and ecosystems.
OBJECTIVES
The CIRCLE project will focus on the investigation of the waste revaluation strategies of different Valencian industrial sectors to help establish a circular economy model. The project includes the preparation of a knowledge map as regards awareness of the generation of non-hazardous solid waste derived from industrial activity in the Valencian Community and its potential for application in the different sectors of our autonomous region.
More specifically, the project is focused on the following technical aspects:
- Analysis of the possibilities of waste revaluation from different Valencian industrial sectors in textiles, making use of technologies from the sector.
- Analysis of the possibilities of revaluation of textile waste in different industrial sectors of the Valencian Community.
EXPECTED RESULTS
The challenge associated with this R & D project lies in creating materials and products from the industrial waste contemplated by the project from the different Valencian industrial sectors.
In essence, the project aims to undertake an initial approximation towards the transition from a traditional linear economy to a circular economy, in which the value of materials and resources are maintained in the economic cycle for as long as possible, and which reduces to the minimum the generation of non-reusable waste, thus making a vital contribution to the efforts of the Valencian industrial community to achieving a more sustainable economy which is both more efficient in the use of resources and more competitive. During this year work will be undertaken on the development and validation of the types of materials that could be manufactured from the waste:
- Insulating materials with high content of waste from revaluated industrial by-products.
- Extruded and injected plastic materials from revaluated industrial by-products
- Rubber components with a content of industrial by-products
- Textile structures and laminated products with different characteristics from industrial by-products.
- Sustainable composites from industrial waste
The different lines of research proposed by the CIRCLE initiative endow the project with both a remarkable innovative character and the potential for creating added value in the transition towards a circular economy and the reuse of the different by-products generated by Valencian industry.
