Circular economy and sustainability
CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS BETWEEN TRACTOR SECTORS IN THE VALENCIA REGION (TRANSPORT/AUTOMOTIVE, FOOTWEAR, TEXTILE AND TOY SECTORS)
CIRCULAR ECONOMY 2.0
Motivation
This initiative arose as a result of further progress in the results obtained in the “CIRCULAR INDUSTRY CV” project (2020-2021), during which a pilot plant was designed, built and fine-tuned to treat multicomposition waste from the footwear, toy and textile sectors. In addition, different industrial symbiosis studies were carried out (intra and intersectorial), to test technologies (injection, 3D printing, glue blender…) to process the fractions of materials obtained from the treatment of the pilot plant and obtain prototypes for each of the sectors involved.
Objectives
• Validation of circular economy models between productive sectors of the Valencian Community creating symbiosis between intrasectoral and intersectoral industries.
• Analysis of those technologies that allow optimization in the classification and recycling of the “CIRCULAR INDUSTRY” pilot plant for multi-composition and multi-material products with the ultimate goal that the effluents of recovered materials are as close as possible to the virgin raw materials available in the world market.
• Performance of individualized studies to assess the potential for circularity of products and waste among the affected sectors, creating validated models.
Value and competitive advantage
-
Obtaining higher-quality waste fractions.
-
Transformation and classification of waste from sectors such as textiles, toys, footwear, and automotive/transport into usable fractions as raw material for the development of value-added products.
-
Incorporation of waste from matrices of different types, reducing the use of virgin materials.
-
Obtaining products with a high environmental and sustainability component from waste in sectors such as textiles, toys, footwear, and automotive/transport.
-
Validation of the results obtained with companies in the Valencian Community through collaborative actions for result transfer
Obtained results
The main result achieved with the execution of this proposal has been the definition of new circular economy models that interconnect the four sectors involved (automotive/transport, footwear, textile, and toy), enabling the utilization of different multi-component materials obtained from the processing of waste in these sectors. For this purpose, the CIRCULAR INDUSTRY CV demonstrator was employed and optimized to enhance its efficacy and efficiency in obtaining higher-quality waste fractions, which has facilitated their subsequent repurposing through various processes to create valuable materials.
Today, given the rising cost of raw materials, the need to reduce external dependency for material supply is especially relevant, making any initiative aimed at this objective particularly valuable.
Therefore, now that the CIRCULAR INDUSTRY-CV technological demonstrator has been developed, it is essential to further improve its performance and expand its capabilities and versatility for other types of multi-component waste, such as those derived from the automotive/transport sector. Optimizing the demonstration plant has thus been another of the outcomes achieved.
Additionally, the circularity studies carried out strengthen synergies among the sectors involved, adding robustness to the cohesion and interrelation within the region, thereby fostering the development of a sustainable economic model that is inspired by the principles of the circular economy and industrial symbiosis
