Year: 2021

MOTIVATION

Environmental legislation is being introduced at break-neck speed to keep pace with consumer demands on the environmental impact of products. The Green Thinking project will increase the application of eco-design precepts in the textile industry. These strategies to reduce environmental impact will be undertaken from an approach of life cycle thinking, in which all the factors involved in the product, materials, processes, use and its final disposal when repair is not possible, will be taken into account.

The results will be presented as prototypes to facilitate the adoption of the different eco-design solutions proposed by textile companies.

OBJECTIVES

By managing projects in a holistic way in which all actors, from concept through the manufacturing line to disposal, are aligned, it will become clear how sustainability can be improved with specific actions at every step. These eco-design strategies will affect the choice of materials and their processing, but also define the methods of repair and recycling.

The main objective of the project is to demonstrate how the use of eco-design principles, different innovative technologies and integrated project management can considerably reduce environmental impact in different sectors of the textile industry in the Valencian Community.

  • Carpets and rugs
  • Workwear
  • Home textiles

EXPECTED RESULTS

At least one prototype will be manufactured for each of the sectors represented in the project: a modular carpet, a set of work clothes consisting of a jacket and reinforced trousers and a textile room divider, whose carbon footprint and scalability will be analysed.

These products, created according to eco-design strategies, will clearly demonstrate how to reduce the carbon footprint of products using eco-design principles, increasing their chances of commercial success in the competitive international market in which the industry finds itself.
