R&D INTO THE EXTRACTION AND STABILISATION OF NATURAL INGREDIENTS FOR USE IN COSMETIC FORMULATIONS
INNATUR
Motivation
The cosmetics market is conditioned by the political and economic situation in the country. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a radical shift in consumer purchasing trends towards personal care products, leaving beauty products to one side. The health crisis led to a boom in 2021 in personal care products like hydro-alcoholic gels and shampoos, in search of products with bacteriostatic properties that protect against external aggression. At the same time, consumers’ concern for health and well-being has led to an increase in the search for sustainable products, where “clean beauty” and “natural” trends are essential for the sale of any product in the sector.
Objectives
- Optimisation of processes for the extraction of raw materials from natural resources and the search for new sources based on upcycling.
- Development of new natural cosmetic formulations for the creation of a portfolio of stable emulsions compatible with the incorporation of cosmetic active ingredients.
- Stabilisation of active ingredients using controlled-release biomimetic systems
- Characterisation of the extracts obtained and the cosmetic textures developed to assess their value in the cosmetic sector.
Expected results
-
Selection of natural sources of interest to the cosmetics sector.
-
Obtaining the optimal extraction method depending on the plant species resulting in the highest concentration of active compounds.
-
Creation of a portfolio of different stable cosmetic texture bases.
-
Establishment of a protocol for the inclusion of the extracts in cosmetic formulations and controlled-release systems that provide valuable properties to the final product.
